South Burlington Wildcats defeated White River Jct. Post 84 3-2 on Day 1 of the Vermont State American Legion Tournament after taking the lead late in the game.
The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Liam Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
Both teams were strong on the bump. Wildcats pitchers struck out eight, while Post 84 Senior Legion sat down six.
WRJ were the first to get on the board in the second when Justin Robinson singled, scoring two runs.
Kaiden Quinn singled on an 0-2 count, which helped the Wildcats tie the game at two in the bottom of the third.
Davis Hobbs earned the win for South Burlington. He gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking four. Rhys Anderson took the loss for White River. The left-handed pitcher went three innings, giving up one run (zero earned) on two hits, striking out one and walking one. Leo Barta stepped on the hill first for Post 84. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) over three innings, striking out five and walking five. Bennett Campbell collected the save.
Cedric LaMothe, Adam Littlefield, Quinn, and Aiden Gray each collected one hit for the South Burlington Wildcats. Wheeler, LaMothe, and Quinn each drove in one run for South Burlington Wildcats. Kyle Tanis led South Burlington Wildcats with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying six walks for the game.
Robinson, the number seven hitter for WRJ, led the way with two runs batted in. The right fielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Robinson, Christian Hathorn, Nate Clark, Barta, and Alex Shareiko each collected one hit for Post 84.
