Mateo Ortiz collected three hits in three at bats, as the South Burlington Wildcats defeated Champlain Valley AL 20-1 on Tuesday at Williston Central School. Ortiz doubled in the fifth inning, singled in the first inning, and singled in the fourth inning.
South Burlington scored 12 runs in the first inning on the way to victory. Matthew Chamberlain singled, scoring one run, Colton Bramhall singled, scoring one run, Webb DeShaw drew a walk, scoring one run, Will LaMothe drew a walk, scoring one run, Jack Foster was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Sebastian Parent singled, scoring two runs, an error scored one run, Ortiz drew a walk, scoring one run, and Bramhall doubled, scoring three runs.
The Wildcats added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after DeShaw walked, LaMothe grounded into a fielder's choice, and Foster singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
Coleton Merchant earned the win for the South Burlington Wildcats. The righty allowed four hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking none. Lander Magoon took the loss for Champlain Valley. The right-handed pitcher went two-thirds of an inning, surrendering 12 runs (seven earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking four.
South Burlington collected 15 hits in the game. Ortiz and Bramhall were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for the Wildcats while hitting back-to-back. Bramhall went 3-for-3 at the plate and led the team with five runs batted in. Parent and Chamberlain each collected multiple hits for South Burlington. The Wildcats had a strong eye at the plate, piling up eight walks for the game. Ortiz and DeShaw led the team with two bases on balls each.
Magoon, Henry McLean, Tom Barnes, and Jimmy Whitman each collected one hit for Champlain Valley AL. Whitman led Champlain Valley with one run batted in. The first baseman went 1-for-2 on the day.
